CERTIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Externally auditing our supply chain, product and organisational practices is vital for our accountability to our customers. Having a third party come in and assess us on all levels encourages us to reduce our emissions each year and improve our business practices.

Greenwashing is a significant problem within the industry given the rising popularity of sustainability. Being able to present these logos on our entire range of fabrics shows our commitment to full transparency and ongoing sustainability.

For over 15 years, sustainability has been at the core of our business and will continue to be our priority. Our long standing partnerships with Climate Active and GECA are proof of that dedication.

GECA CERTIFICATION
In 2005, as we began our journey to improve our sustainability we searched for a standard that was independent and transparent, recognised globally, objective and not for profit. We chose GECA as it met all these criteria as well as adhering to the EU Ecolabel global textile standard.

GECA has stringent criteria that encompass our entire supply chain from supply, manufacturing to packaging. This extends to our partner mill and dye house, ensuring all dyes and chemicals meet the EU Ecolabel standard.

Being Australian made is important to us, it enables us to stay connected to our supply chain and hold close relationships with our suppliers. This ensures we all have the same environmental priorities when collaborating, to create our truly sustainable product line.

Our GECA certification strengthens this relationship and gives us the opportunity to re-assess and improve our practices as the landscape of sustainable design evolves.

You will notice throughout this Sustainability Report there are references to certain GECA criteria related to our certification. There are 61in total that we need to meet to receive our certificate.

UN GLOBAL COMPACT
Sustainable Living Fabrics has been proudly committed to the UN Global Compact since March 2008 when we produced our first Sustainability Report to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines. Our commitment to aligning our business practices with the UN Sustainable Development goals is one of the cornerstones of our sustainability journey.

Sustainable Living Fabrics’ corporate strategy is driven by a proactive sustainability agenda that is more than just an environmental agenda. It is about social responsibility and it is legitimate, transparent and credible. We embrace independently audited and certified environmental credentials as key criteria for true sustainability.

OUR 2020/21 REPORT
Our 2020/21 report provides quantifiable data and addresses our company, its history, products, market and the corporate philosophies that guide our sustainability agenda, which in turn drives corporate decision-making. We are committed to reporting at least every two years.

Sustainable Living Fabrics is committed to the Global Compact principles of building sustainable markets, combating corruption, safeguarding the environment and ensuring social inclusion. We recognise this is increasingly important for the long-term value for the business. A strong focus on CSR issues drives a holistic approach to our decision making from selection of suppliers to marketing, sales and end of life.

Sustainable Living Fabrics transparently embraces the UN Global Compact philosophy that sustainability is about comprehensive CSR. This ensures that no activity of the business adversely impacts on any individual or community in terms of the international principles; embracing the environment, human rights, labour standards and anti-corruption.

CARBON NEUTRAL CERTIFICATION

In 2010, we became the first company and entire product range to be certified carbon neutral under the Carbon Neutral Program developed by the Australian Government, now known as Climate Active. We have continued to recertify to ensure our entire product line is offset from farm to fabric.

WHAT IS CLIMATE ACTIVE?
Climate Active is an ongoing partnership between the Australian Government and Australian businesses to drive voluntary climate action. The brand represents Australia’s collective effort to measure, reduce, and offset carbon emissions to lessen our negative impact on the environment. It is through Climate Active that we achieve our carbon neutral status.

ORGANISATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Our organisation certification assesses our in house practices, such as transport, electricity, printing, recycling etc. Being a small business, our emissions here are low yet we always look for more ways to reduce internal emissions.

GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL AUSTRALIA
It is important for us to be active within the sustainability industry. One of the ways we do this is through the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) which helps connect businesses like us together to create a strong community and wider reach within sustainable design.

In 2005, Sustainable Living Fabrics became a founding member and supporter of the GBCA which manages the Green Star Rating Program. In 2020 we celebrated 15 years as active members. This is a huge milestone for us and a reflection of our long term commitment to sustainability in design and construction.

The GBCA was launched in 2002 as a national, not-for-profit organisation that is committed to developing a sustainable property industry for Australia. The GBCA is supported by both industry and government across Australia as it drives the building industry towards sustainability.

By supporting the GBCA we support an industry that is committed to future proof design. Creating a community and partnering with organisations that share our values makes a world of difference, we believe positive change happens quicker when businesses are working together towards a common goal.

GREENSTAR
Launched by the Green Building Council of Australia in 2003, Green Star is Australia’s only national, voluntary rating system for buildings and communities.

Green Star is an internationally recognised rating system for sustainability. By using our fabrics along with GECA Certified Furniture, Fittings and Foam contributes to meeting the GBCA’s Green Star sustainability rating program at Level A.
